THE STORY

In 1989, one of the greatest sports stories of all time unfolded on the clay of Roland Garros.

A 17-year-old Michael Chang against Ivan Lendl, the world No. 1. A mismatch that seemed decided before it even started. David against Goliath on clay, as some called it. And then the whole thing drifted into something nobody could quite explain anymore.

Chang cramped so badly he could barely walk, so he started improvising. Moonballs. An underarm serve. That iconic Reebok outfit. And somehow, complete belief.

The crowd slowly realized they were no longer watching a normal tennis match, but one of those afternoons people remember forever in strange little details.

THE DESIGN

On the front: A reinterpretation of the classic comic rivalry stare-down, together with details of the legendary match.

On the back: The entire five-set match as a hand drawn comic strip by Marvel Artist Moy Rodríguez - with all its legendary details.

Including:
• cramps and chaos
• moonballs flying into the stratosphere
• the legendary underarm serve
• Lendl’s oversized wristbands
• and, of course, Chang’s iconic Reebok outfit

Design by Moy Rodríguez - Barcelona, Spain

Meet the Artist:

Moy Rodríguez is a comic artist based in Barcelona. After studying Illustration and Comic Art, he began his professional career with Zenescope Entertainment and has since worked for major publishers such as DC, Marvel, and Hasbro on titles including Spiderman, Power Rangers and a long list of characters most of us grew up with.

We’re genuinely happy we could bring Moy on board for David vs. Goliath. During our first conversation, he immediately started talking about Carlos Moyá and old clay-court battles. It felt right straight away.

Because Chang vs. Lendl never really felt like a normal tennis match to us anyway. It felt more like one of those impossible superhero comic-book stories - the young outsider against the unbeatable giant, somehow surviving through chaos, courage and complete madness.
