Paris. Je t’aime. Grand Slam #2

Paris, 1989. A 17-year-old against the world No. 1. On paper, it wasn't a match, it was a formality. Ivan Lendl was the best player on the planet. Michael Chang was a teenager who wasn't supposed to be on the same side of the draw, let alone across the net from him in the fourth round.

What happened instead is the reason people still talk about it thirty-seven years later. Cramps that should have ended the match. Moonballs lobbed so high they looked like they belonged in a different sport. An underarm serve, hit not as a joke but as a weapon, because Chang had nothing left in his legs and had to find another way to win. And on the other side of the net, a completely rattled Ivan Lendl, unable to solve a kid who refused to play the match on Lendl's terms.

It's the kind of story you remember the room you watched it in. What the living room looked like. What the carpet smelled like. David beat Goliath on clay that day, and he did it by breaking every rule about how the sport was supposed to be played.

For this one, we brought in Moy Rodríguez, a Barcelona-based comic artist with Marvel and DC credits, to draw the match frame by frame, in detail, the way only someone who understands panel-by-panel storytelling could.


The front is a comic-style reinterpretation of the rivalry stare-down, match details worked into the composition. The back is the real centerpiece: the entire five-set match as a hand-drawn comic strip, cramps and chaos, moonballs flying into the stratosphere, the underarm serve, Lendl's oversized wristbands, Chang's Reebok kit, all of it, panel by panel, the way it actually happened.
